Last day of the school year!

Last day of the school year!

I still remember, a little over a year ago, sitting in the intake interview with Gabe, his dad, and his grandparents. I listened as they shared about the childhood trauma he had endured, anger outbursts, academic struggles. and social anxiety. Anytime he was asked a question he avoided eye contact and he would mumble whatever answer he gave. He walked with his head down and avoided conversation.

I think back to that moment now and I am astounded at how he has grown. Over the course of his time at Heritage Ranch, Gabe confronted his insecurities about his intelligence and learned to open up when he was angry or sad instead of withdrawing and avoiding those around him. He slowly began to share about the abandonment he had experienced as a child and the inherent distrust it created for him. He processed in counseling, with the houseparents, at school, and with his family his struggle to socially engage and the urge to seek comfort in isolation and video games.

At every turn the Ranch staff reminded him that he was loved, valued, and worthy of connection, encouraging him to trust those the Lord had placed in his life. We encouraged him to work to create new coping mechanisms and belief systems.

As he took on the challenge of addressing his old coping mechanisms things began to shift. He started to reach out to the Education Coordinator for help with his studies when he needed it, to engage with the leaders and youth at youth group, to seek out the houseparents when he was frustrated or hurt, and to cultivate deeper relationship with his dad. And most notably, he began to walk in confidence.

If you met Gabe today you can be sure you would be greeted with a captivating smile and engaging conversation. What a long way he has come. Happy Graduation Gabe - Jeremiah 29:11
